Talk with Ulrich Brand: Transformative Cells and Capitalism at the Limit
TULE is pleased to announce an upcoming talk, featuring Ulrich Brand. His talk is going to focus on the concept of “transformative cells” to discuss the strategies and alliance politics of trade unions regarding the stalled green transition and unions’ relationship with the climate movement, and on his book Capitalism at the Limit: A Political Ecology of a World in Crisis, co-authored with Markus Wissen.

Bio: Ulrich Brand is Professor of International Politics at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Vienna, where he is scientific coordinator of the Research Network on Latin America. His research interests are the crisis of liberal globalisation, (global) social-ecological topics like resource politics and the green economy, critical state and governance studies and Latin America. Together with Markus Wissen, he introduced the concept of the “imperial mode of living” — dominant patterns of production, distribution, and consumption that are deeply rooted in the everyday practices of the upper and middle classes of the global North, and increasingly in the emerging countries of the global South.

Bio: Thea Riofrancos is a Professor of Political Science at Providence College, a Strategic Co-Director of the Climate and Community Institute, and a fellow at the Transnational Institute. Her research focuses on resource extraction, climate change, the energy transition, the global lithium sector and EV supply chains, green industrial policy, social movements, and the Latin American left.

Talk with Lorena Lombardozzi, Tim Pringle and Pradip Swarnakar — Recentring Workers of the Global South in the Just Transition Debate: Unionisation and the Informal Workforce in Chinese, Indian and Uzbek Coal Mines
Scholarship on Just Transition (JT) has overwhelmingly focused on unionised workers in the Global North. While recent debates have expanded to include climate, energy and environmental justice in the Global South, analysis of JT’s implications for non-unionised and informal economy workers remains limited. Many climate-vulnerable countries have distinctive forms of unionisation and labour informality and there is currently limited understanding of whether and how JT Guidelines can be applied to labour and social relations in the Global South where dependence on fossil fuels – particularly coal – is significant. This in turn raise questions concerning who wins and who loses in processes of transition. This talk aims to expand the conceptualisation of JT by examining the dynamics of complex forms of formal, informal and non-unionised labour in the Global South. We address critical gaps in current scholarship and offer a more inclusive reflections for understanding transitions in diverse economic contexts.

Authors’ bios:
Lorena Lombardozzi is a Political Economist at SOAS, University of London. She has extensive work experience in the global south and particularly in Central Asia. She has published on theoretical debates on political economy, inequality, growth and distribution, applied areas of gender and feminist economics, labour and work, welfare state and social policy, food & energy systems, and GVCs .
Tim Pringle is a Reader in Development Studies at SOAS, University of London and former Editor of The China Quarterly. His research focuses on labour movements, industrial relations and trade union reform in China and Vietnam. His books include Trade Unions in China: the challenge of labour unrest and co-authorship of The Challenge of Transition: Trade Unions in Russia, China and Vietnam.
Dr. Pradip Swarnakar is Professor of Sociology at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. His areas of interest are environmental sociology, climate change policy, social networks, and JT. He is the founder of Just Transition Research Centre and Climate and Energy Policy Research Lab at IIT Kanpur, India.
